Deep within the captivating rolling meadows, lived a young shepherd. His being was mostly unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was mainly to care for his herd of rams.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the wind across the solo tree on the peak were his main co-dwellers. Day upon day, guarding his responsibilities imbued in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. During one such occasion from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome scheme.
Tales of predators preying on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the villagers.
One afternoon he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills to help but discovered no beast.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This trick persisted for a couple of more days. But, one morning, a real wolf did attack the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated here and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
